How the puzzles work, and what happens to your streak

How do I play?

Tapping a tile flips the lights around it — usually itself and its four neighbours. Lit turns dark and dark turns lit. Clear the whole board and you win. The How to Play button in the game walks through it in about thirty seconds, including the tiles that behave differently.

What is the target number?

The fewest moves that board can possibly be solved in — not an estimate. The game works it out exactly before handing you the puzzle. Matching it is a perfect solve.

Because tapping a tile twice undoes it, a misclick always costs you two moves. That is why scores land on the target, the target plus two, the target plus four, and so on.

Where is my streak kept?

On your device. There is no account to sign into, so nothing to lose a password for — but it also means that in a browser, clearing your site data clears your history with it. The app keeps its record more durably and backs it up, so reinstalling restores it.

I reinstalled the app and my streak is gone

It should survive a reinstall on the same device — the app keeps its record outside the space that deleting it clears. Restoring a history that did not come back needs the installation ID the app's settings screen shows, so keep a note of it if this happens to you.

Does it work offline?

Yes — that is deliberate. The app generates its puzzles on the device, so the daily, practice boards, hints and challenge runs all work on a plane or underground. Your results sync up next time you have a connection.

Is the daily puzzle the same for everyone?

Yes. Each day's three boards are derived from the date, so every player gets the same easy, medium and hard puzzles.

I think this board is impossible

Every board is generated together with a verified solution, so there is always a way through. If one still looks impossible, the hint button will show you a tile that is a correct move from exactly where you are — not from the start — which is usually enough to see what you had missed.

What is kept about me

Very little, and none of it is a name or an email. The privacy page sets out exactly what is held, for how long, and what deleting the app removes.
